Clock Hotel, on Crown Street, runs four different lunch specials Monday to Friday, 11:30am–3pm, and none of them ask you to compromise: a $16 poke bowl (add salmon or chicken for $6), a $17 Cape Moreton prawn po' boy, a $19 chicken schnitzel with fries, or a $20 cheeseburger with fries. Rotate through the week and you've covered most of what a lunch special should be.

A few doors down, Surry Hills Hotel's Mana Lunch Special mixes Thai and pub classics — cashew nut chicken, khao gai yang, green curry, a beef burger, a chicken schnitzel burger, or a seafood basket — all from $16.90 with a soft drink, or $19.90 with a beer or wine, Monday to Friday.

For something more considered, Nour's $59pp weekday set lunch (Thursday and Friday, from midday) is a shared banquet menu built to get a table in and out within the hour — generous plates, quick service, no fuss. Groups of up to six, everyone dining off the same menu.

Just over the border in Alexandria, Sydney Brewery's Brewer's Lunch pairs any burger or wrap with a schooner from the core beer range for $28, Monday to Wednesday, 12–3pm — worth the short walk if you're around Surry Hills' southern end.
